Guide to Spirituality: The 12 Laws of the Universe

There is so much more depth to life than the daily grind. Getting in touch with your spirituality is all about finding genuine inner peace, both within your heart and mind, and living everyday with those intentions.

Sometime last year, I wrote a meditation piece on how to manifest your dreams into reality. That article was inspired by a desire to live a more spiritual life, but also in hopes that others would too. There is so much more depth to life than the daily grind. Getting in touch with your spirituality is all about finding genuine inner peace, both within your heart and mind, and living everyday with those intentions.

In my previous meditation article, I talked about the law of attraction—but have you heard about the law of divine oneness, the law of vibration or the law of correspondence? Indeed, the law of attraction is just one of the 12 Immutable Laws of the Universe, and understanding each law can provide us with a roadmap to a better, more fulfilling life. Once you have a solid grasp of these spiritual laws, you develop a clearer picture of your place in the world. This guide will summarize and explain how these laws influence your life, and how your awareness of them can lead to a positive change.

1. Law of Divine Oneness:

The most foundational law of the universe, the Law of Divine Oneness highlights that all things in existence—both, seen or unseen—are connected. What we think, say, do, or believe all have an effect on others, as well as the Universe. Once we become aware that everything is one, the way we think and act begins to change: We start to see our own reflections in the people and things around us. The more good we think, say and do, the more it’ll set off a positive chain of reaction around us. In real life, this could mean being more compassionate, as we are all part of the same. So, ask yourself, “How can I show more compassion and acceptance toward those I don’t like/understand?”

2. Law of Vibration:

Everything is made up of energy—you, your goals, your phone, money—everything has a frequency and a vibration. At a microscopic level, everything is constantly moving, vibrating at a specific frequency. Nothing ever stands still, as it is always either being pushed away or pulled toward something. Furthermore, similar vibrations attract. So, if you want something, you must match your vibration to the object of your desire. Positive emotions, such as happiness, peacefulness and gratitude are all high frequencies, while negative emotions fall on the lower end of the scale. If you feel the need to elevate your frequency, there are lots of great practices, such as yoga, sound bathing, and meditating.

3. Law of Correspondence:

“As above, so below. As within, so without.” This law states that patterns repeat throughout the universe, and on a personal level, your life and surroundings are a reflection of what you’re thinking and feeling inside. It’s happening for you, not to you. If your life seems chaotic and fearful, it’s because there is chaos and fear within. If your life seems calm and grounded, it is because you feel peace within. In any troubling situation, ask yourself what the situation can show you about yourself, and what requires healing within.

4. Law of Attraction:

Undoubtedly the most talked about universal law, it states, “like attracts like, you get what you focus on”. Believe what you’re seeking is possible. Hold on to the thought of what you want, make it absolutely clear in your mind, because you become what you think about most, and you also attract what you think about most. If you see it in your mind, you’re going to hold it in your hand. On another note, this law makes certain people anxious that if they think negative thoughts, it’ll attract undesirable situations, but remember, this law is not a punishment, but rather a very honest mirror of our self-worth and mindset. Your current circumstance is the outcome of decisions you’ve made in the past, and now you are fully able to make new and better decisions which will attract a whole new and better set of circumstances.

5. Law of Inspired Action:

The law of inspired action is about taking real, actionable steps to bring what we want into fruition. Often, the motivation to act comes from within, a gentle nudge, or little voice in our head. It’s not always a well thought-out plan. This law is all about slowing down, getting quiet and in touch with our own intuition, listening to our own internal guidance. When we let go of our need to control, and instead become open to all possibilities, it makes room for new doors to open.

6. Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy:

As mentioned, everything in the universe is constantly shifting and evolving on an energetic level. Every action is preceded by a thought, every thought has the power to manifest into our physical reality. Meaning, every individual has within themselves the power to change their situation, no matter what that may be. The takeaway behind this law is that even the smallest thought can become an action which can have a profound effect. Just like the seed of a mighty tree holds all its promise in a tiny shell, you also have the power within you to move mountains. So try doing small things every day that uplift you, because even a small shift can lead to major results.

7. Law of Cause and Effect:

Also known as the law of karma, any action causes a reaction, whatever you put out—good or bad—you get back. Even if not right away, that vibration has already made a ripple effect. As they say, what goes around comes around. Be aware of how your actions and decisions are affecting not just yourself but those around you, and focus on sending out good vibes only.

8. Law of Compensation:

Closely related to the law of attraction and the law of correspondence, this law states that you get what you give, you reap what you sow, whatever it may be, however much or however little. Trust that you will always be compensated for your work, and be open to receiving it. Even the love, joy, and kindness you spread; it is all rewarded.

9. Law of Relativity:

Although we’re all prone to compare things in our world, this law tells us that in reality, there is no “good” or “bad”, everything is neutral. It all comes down to our perspective and perception. We are the ones who have the power to assign meaning to everything in our lives, nothing would matter or affect us until and unless we do. Eckhart Tolle, in ‘A New Earth’, writes, “In form, you are and will always be inferior to some; superior to others. In essence, you are neither inferior nor superior to anyone. True self-esteem and true humility arise out of that realization. In the eyes of the ego, self-esteem and humility are contradictory. In truth, they are one and the same.” Think about that.

10. Law of Polarity:

Everything has a polar opposite: If there’s an up, there’s a down. If there’s light, there’s dark. One cannot exist without the other. According to the ancient text, The Kybalion, “Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.” For example, we would never know pain without having first felt true happiness. Experiencing these polarities is part of growing up, helping us learn from our mistakes and understanding what we do and do not want.

11. Law of Rhythm:

This law dictates that every vibration has a rhythm, that’s how it attracts another vibration with the same rhythmic flow. Through these rhythms, cycles, the seasons, the developmental stages of living things are created. Cycles are a natural part of the universe, everything is either growing or dying, forever changing, all we can do is embrace the ride. A high period is always followed by a low. It doesn’t mean something’s wrong; it’s rather telling you to slow down during this low period, rest and introspect, and know that it will change. If everything in your life is great, then savor the moment. Each stage has tremendous gifts to offer.

12. Law of Gender:

Lastly, the law of gender has to do with the masculine and feminine energy that exists in all things. They are two sides of the same coin—yin and yang. Both are equally required in order for life to exist. No one is greater or lesser than the other. In our modern day society, we tend to operate from a more masculine, “hustle and grind” mentality, which doesn’t give us much time to just be and live. Finding balance between masculine and feminine energies can help you live more authentically.

And that’s it, folks! The 12 universal laws. Being able to understand and conceptualize these laws in a way that makes sense to you, and your life, is really the only thing that matters. Because now that you’ve been introduced to these laws, I’m sure they’ll come up in your life again and again.
